1st Grade Language Arts

Overview

Summary
1st Grade Language Arts builds reading, writing, and character through authentic literature.
Description

Phonics/Language/Reading

In phonics and language classes, students are introduced to basic grammar concepts such as forming and punctuating sentences and identifying parts of speech. Students apply phonics rules to decode one and two-vowel words, consonant blends and digraphs, and multi-syllabic words. Character-building, decodable stories from ABeka Book reinforce concepts and build fluency. Reading comprehension skills and vocabulary knowledge are strengthened through reading and enjoying classic, authentic literature and poetry throughout the year.

Writing

Students learn to summarize written material and transform their thoughts into words using the Institute for Excellence in Writing’s structure and style writing lessons and creative journaling.

Handwriting

Students learn to form letters using the D'Nealian Handwriting method, which provides a continuous, slanted script that easily transitions from manuscript to cursive.

Spelling

The All About Spelling series uses a multi-sensory approach—auditory, visual, and kinesthetic–combined with consistent reinforcement to ensure that students retain reliable spelling rules and how to apply them in daily writing. Concepts include:

  • Spell phonograms A-Z, digraphs (TH, SH, CH, CK, etc.), and words containing them, such as bath, duck, cash, etc.
  • Spell words ending in FF, LL, and SS, as in cliff, will, and miss
  • Spell words with initial consonant blends, as in frog and swim
  • Spell plural words with the suffix s or es, such as cups and lunches
  • Spell compound words, such as cobweb and bathtub
