Loom

Overview

Loom is the video recording program that students will be asked to use when providing a video/speaking assignment for his or her classes.

Downloading and Setting up Loom

  • In order to make sure the student is set up for success, it will need to be downloaded.
  • Visit www.loom.com
  • Click the purple button in the middle of the screen or at the top right corner that says “Get Loom for Free”.

  • Create a username to log in with and store the videos as they are created.
  • If you have a Google account (Gmail), you will want to click “Sign up with Google”. Otherwise, type in your student email.
  • Click “Create Free Account”.

  • Type in your first and last name as well as create a password.
  • Check your email for a verification email then click verify.
  • Sign in using your account that you just created.

How to Record with Loom

  • Congratulations! You can now select that this is for education, name your library (where videos will be stored), and even download the Chrome extension or Desktop app to help you.
  • You have created an account and are ready to start recording.
  • You will have a helpful widget open in the bottom left corner that will give you a step-by-step checklist:

  • To record a video you will open Loom from the extension on your Google Chrome browser or through your Desktop App.
  • Select “Record a Video” if you are inside the library.
  • If you select the extension button, it will automatically give you options to start recording.

  • Select the format you want to record in.

  • Select the first box “Full Screen”, a specific window, the current tab that is open, or your camera (best for speeches).
  • You will need to make sure you have selected the right camera from your computer to connect to the correct source.
  • Select the correct microphone.
  • These two steps will need to be done with a parent’s help as they are specific to your personal computer and may not match the example shown above.
  • Now, click “Start Recording”.
  • A box will pop up for you to select what you want to share on your screen.
  • This box will not appear if you have only your camera selected to be viewed while recording.
  • Click Share.
  • You will now have a 3-second countdown on your screen.
  • If you need to pause for a second, simply click anywhere on the screen. When ready, click "start" again.
  • This widget will appear next to your window (Should be in the bottom left of your screen).

  • This will help you control your recording. The red square is to “Stop” your recording. If you click this, you will not be able to continue to record. You will see the amount of time you have spent on your recording.
  • The dotted design is to blur an area.
  • The backward arrow is to start over your recording immediately.
  • The || is to “Pause” your recording if you need to take a moment in the middle and want to continue recording.
  • The Trash Can design at the end is to delete what you have just created.
  • The red square is to STOP and save your video.
  • You will hear a prompt then a new window will pop up. You will now be able to see your recording.

How to Share Your Recordings

  • When your new window appears, it will look something like this below:

  • As you can see at the top, you can type and change the name of your video.
  • When you click “Share”, you can email it directly but it is recommended to copy the link as that is usually preferred by teachers.

Congratulations! You are set up for success and ready to submit assignments. If you need further assistance, please reach out to your teacher to get specifics on what is expected and needed for your classwork.
