Young Illustrators (Grades PreK-5)

TABLE OF CONTENTS


Overview

  • Young Illustrators is an event that provides an opportunity for students in grades prek-5 to participate in the writing, illustration, production, and presentation of original books.
  • Participation in one or both of the Young Illustrators events fulfills the Student Social requirement. Parents can register, opt-out, or submit a correction in the Enlightium Parents app by selecting "Social" in the main menu.
  • All adjudication is done at the local school level, and the top books from each grade level will be chosen and awarded placement.

  • Registration for Young Illustrators is closed for the 2022-2023 year.
  • Participation in the Young Illustrators counts as fulfilling the Student Social requirement. 
  • Late registration is not available for Young Illustrators.
  • Students who meet attendance and participation requirements are entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card at the end of the year.

Book criteria

 

The following criteria should be used as books are prepared:

1. The book can be a physical, bound book or it can be a digital book.

2. The book must use original student illustrations.

3. Themes should reflect Christian values.


Judging criteria

Enlightium teachers judge each book by the following:

1. Opening Pages—fresh and interesting, grabs the reader's attention

2. Length—correct for plot and age of the reader

3. Ending—believable to the story, brings good closure to the plot

4. Story—holds the reader's attention, shows originality

5. Characters—relate to story rather than popping in, not too many, well-described

6. Description—choice of words is descriptive, feelings are expressed

7. Sentence structure—varies, is mechanically correct

8. Mechanics—proper capitalization, punctuation, spelling, grammar

9. Illustrations—match the story of the book, are neat and colorful, are a good medium for text, and are original

10. Neatness—neat overall, neat penmanship

11. Binding (if physical copy)—neat, looks professional

12. Cover—draws the reader's attention

13. Christian theme—seen in story and illustrations


What costs are associated?

 

Families participating in the Young Illustrators absorb the following costs:

  • Materials for book creation.

  • Mailing costs if option 2 as noted below is selected.

  • Option 1: Email the digital version of the book to sharee@enlightium.ai
  • Option 2: Send the book (or a copy of the book) via mail* to:

Timeline

 


  • October 3, 2022: Initial meeting with Ms. Sha'Ree Bromley
  • November 7, 2022, 10:00 - 11:00 am PT: Optional check-in meeting
  • January 1 - February 6, 2023: Book submission
  • March 31, 2023: Announcement of winners
